A barista from Costa Coffee’s Wakefield Drive Thru has been crowned Global Barista of the Year 2026, marking the first time a competitor from the UK & Ireland has taken the top title since 2017.

Charlie Denton, who has worked at the Wakefield store for six years, impressed judges in the international final held in London, competing against baristas from Costa Coffee markets across the world, including the UAE, Poland and China.

Following an outstanding performance in the sixteenth Costa Coffee Global Barista of the Year competition, Charlie was recognised for his technical precision, creativity and passion for coffee, with his signature creations – a Caramelised Banana and Date Latte and iced variation – demonstrating both innovation and personal flair.

Charlie is a familiar face to customers at the Wakefield Drive Thru, where he is known for his high-quality coffee craftsmanship and customer service.

The global final, held on 24–25 March 2026 at Protein Studios in London, saw six finalists compete across four challenging rounds designed to test skill, precision and expertise.

"Winning the Global Barista of the Year is an incredible honour," says Charlie. "Each cup I serve is made with care, and this journey has been about celebrating the creativity and passion that goes into every coffee. I’m proud to represent Wakefield and share my love of coffee on a global stage."

As this year’s winner, Charlie will embark on an international trip to one of Costa Coffee’s global markets, gaining first-hand experience of coffee culture around the world.

Daniel Snowden, head judge at the competition, and operations excellence deployment manager EMENA at Costa Coffee, added: "This year’s finalists were extraordinary, showcasing skill, creativity, and heart in every round. Charlie stood out not only for his technical expertise but also for the precision in every coffee served. It’s a joy to celebrate the dedication and talent of Costa Coffee’s baristas worldwide."

Second place was awarded to Mary France Mercader, a 31-year-old barista from Costa Coffee’s Dubai Mall Fashion Avenue store, while third place went to Kyle Fu, a 32-year-old barista from Hangzhou East Railway Station in China.

Costa Coffee’s Global Barista of the Year competition brings together baristas from around the world to showcase the expertise, creativity and passion behind every cup.
